To be clear, there is a great deal to appreciate in the most recent draft update to the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan, also known as the BVCP or simply the comp plan. The document reflects thoughtful work and meaningful community engagement. Its clarity and succinctness — reducing policies from 210 to 102 — make it far more accessible and usable. This is a significant improvement.

The 2026 draft of the Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan lays out an ambitious vision for economic vitality — support for key industries, workforce alignment, affordable commercial space, innovation hubs and a renewed commitment to arts and culture. At the same time, the community is navigating the tremors of federal funding uncertainty, housing constraints, and a global economy that rewards speed and adaptability.

For 22 years, the Boulder International Film Festival has been more than just a weekend at the movies. It has grown into one of Boulder County’s most beloved cultural traditions—an event that brings neighbors together, celebrates creativity, and reminds us why storytelling still matters in a fast-moving digital world.

And this year, that celebration carries even more meaning.
