logoSpectra Logic Celebrates 30 Years of “Tape Without Pain”

Like so many high-tech startup companies in town, Spectra Logic - innovators in backup and archive storage - was founded in CEO Nathan Thompson’s apartment while an engineering student at CU-Boulder. Unlike many high-tech startups, it was 30 years ago.

The company is a data-backup solutions firm in the fast-moving field of high-technology - manufacturing tape, disk and encryption libraries in the U.S. it helps organizations be more efficient with cost and productivity while protecting and storing its data. Spectra Logic is headquartered locally with an international office in England and sales offices throughout the world. There are nearly 300 employees worldwide at this privately held company.

“We do all of our manufacturing here - from line workers and assemblers to engineers and support. You’ll always get an employee from Boulder,” states Molly Rector, vice president of worldwide marketing and product management at Spectra Logic. This works best from a quality standpoint. “Four of the last five years have been profitable,” she said. Some of the company’s high-profile customers include AT&T, ALLTEL, Bank One, Cisco, Hitachi, and Sprint.

Last November as part of the anniversary launch, founders of Spectra Logic purchased an 80,712-square-foot office building in Boulder. The company plans to move all of the Boulder-based employees into one facility by spring 2010 Rector said. The new robotic-based product released last fall, “is designed to support future research and technology needs,” she says. The Spectra T-FinityTM product is known as the industry’s most advanced enterprise tape library - targeted for use in data-intensive environments such as large enterprise IT, federal, high performance computing and media/entertainment.
